1. 2007 Dom. Edmond Jaquin, Roussette de Savoie, Savoie, France $8 gl $32 btl
The Altesse, or Roussette de Savoie, vine was brought back from the island of Cyprus by the Dukes of Savoie. The French wine guide Galet identifies Altesse in Furmint in Hungary. The best Hungarian vintages were reserved for the table of the Emperors of Austria and Hungary, in other words for the table of "Les Altesses" ["Altesse" = "Highness"]. This may be how the vine which produced this wine came to be referred to as "Altesse".
The nose shows a combination of honey, orange and thyme. The wine is full-bodied and rich with long lingering finish.
2. 2007 Elk Cove, Pinot Gris, Willamette Valley, Oregon $8 gl $32 btl
Pinot gris (or pinot grigio, as it is known in Italy) probably is the best-known "white" variant-clone of Pinot Noir. Ripe pinot gris grapes may be described as having colors from bluish grey to light pinkish brown.
Elk Cove Vineyards and Estate was established in 1973 by Pat and Joe Campbell, on a secluded property in the North Willamette Valley. The first year of commercial production was released in 1978. Estate vineyards now cover over 100 acres on three separate sites in the Northern Willamette Valley.
This wine shows good varietal expression on the nose with white flowers and peach, followed by notes of citrus, grapefruit and a little pear on the palate.
3. 2006 Michael Austin, "High Flyer," Viognier, Borra Vineyard, Lodi, Ca $8 gl $32 btl
Viognier is the white grape of the Condrieu, Chateau Grillet and Cote Rotie appellations of the northern Rhone Valley in France. Many winemakers would consider Viognier the "holy grail" of white wine.
This viognier has vibrant acidity and a spicy, floral finish. The fruit for this wine comes from the Borra family's Gill Creek Ranch in the Clement Hills, along the north bank of the Mokelumne River. |
