Alcatraz Cruises
Beauty. History. Infamy.
Alcatraz and history go hand in hand. Once home to some of America's most notorious criminals, the federal penitentiary that operated here from 1934 to 1963 brought a dark mystique to the Rock. The presence of infamous inmates like Al "Scarface" Capone, and the "Birdman" Robert Stroud helped to establish the island's notoriety. To this day, Alcatraz is best known as one of the world's most legendary prisons.

Many people, though, are unaware of the wealth of other stories to be learned on the island. Alcatraz is now home to rare flowers and plants, marine wildlife, and thousands of roosting and nesting sea birds. Civil War-era buildings dotting the island give insight into the 19th century when the island served as both a harbor defense fort and a military prison. You can also see visible reminders of the American Indian Occupation that started in 1969 after the prison closed, highlighting an important milestone in the American Indian rights movement.

Come experience the beauty, history and infamy of Alcatraz on the San Francisco Bay. You'll be astounded by what you learn and see.

Cellhouse Audio Tour
No one can tell the Alcatraz tale like the men who actually lived it. The award-winning Alcatraz Cellhouse Audio Tour brings history alive through the actual voices of the correctional officers and inmates who lived on the island during the infamous Federal Penitentiary era.

Hear both sides of life in the island prison including such famous events as escape attempts, "The Battle of '46", food riots, and surviving solitary confinement.

The new Cellhouse Audio Tour is an expanded version of the original award-winning tour and includes new stories, new narrators, and explores new areas of the Cellhouse. The tour is available in English, Spanish, German, French, Italian and Japanese.

If you prefer not to take the Cellhouse Tour today, we will happily refund your audio tour ticket price. Please let a supervisor know at the entrance to the Cellhouse.

Conservation
As a partner operating in a National Park, Alcatraz Cruises(TM) is committed to preserving the natural resources of Alcatraz and enhancing the understanding and appreciation of these resources. What does this mean for our visitors?

We are working to protect the air - Our Alcatraz Cruises ferry boats have been re-powered with the most fuel efficient, low emission engines available. We will extend our commitment to clean air by installing exhaust after treatment technologies that decreases particulate and NOx emissions an additional 80% over California’s strict Tier II air quality requirements.

We are working to protect wildlife – More than twenty-five species of birds call Alcatraz home. During the months of February to September we put special procedures in place to ensure we don’t disturb critical nesting habitat.

We are working to be good stewards of the environment – whether it involves organic food options, interpretive information on wildlife, recycling, or sustainable building and design practices, we are doing our best to protect our natural environment.
