Your tempo: Olafur Eliasson
Museum

Olafur Eliasson has created a new work of art as part of a long-running art car program sponsored by BMW. His work transforms BMW's H2R hydrogen-powered race car, shrouding the alternative fuel vehicle in a new skin of steel mesh, mirror-coated stainless steel, and many layers of ice to focus our attention on the relation between car design and global warming. This exhibition features the frozen vehicle, titled Your mobile expectations: BMW H2R project, in its first public and sole U.S. presentation, in conjunction with the Eliasson survey exhibition. Encased in a room-size freezer in the Museum's architecture and design galleries, Your mobile expectations is accompanied by two recent works: The glacier mill series, a photographic suite that depicts huge shafts carved by melting water through Iceland's Vatnajökull glacier, and a short film focusing on a series of workshops in the artist's studio.

Abstract Rhythms: Paul Klee and Devendra Banhart
Museum

Music was a consistent source of inspiration for Paul Klee. Prior to turning his attention to painting, drawing, and printmaking, Klee, who came from a family of musicians, was an accomplished violinist who performed regularly in concerts. As a foundational aspect of his life, music surfaces as an explicit reference within much of his art. This exhibition features works by Klee that reveal his affinity for music, as well as new drawings by Devendra Banhart, a musician and visual artist, made in conjunction with his most recent album, Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon. Part of an ongoing presentation within Matisse and Beyond, the exhibition highlights the synesthetic relationship present in both artists’ works on paper, drawing on Dr. Carl Djerassi’s gifts and extended loans to SFMOMA of more than 150 works by Klee. Banhart is a musician known for folk songs with a surrealist inflection. He is also a visual artist who, like many figures working today, considers Klee an important creative touchstone. Though they were born a century apart, both artists oscillate between abstraction and figuration - a pendulum enlivened by each one’s own invisible rhythmic pulse.

Peanuts Lives: A Tribute to Charles M. Schulz
Museum

Lucy’s psychiatric booth, Charlie Brown and the kite-eating tree, Linus’ security blanket, Snoopy as the Red Baron, and other Peanuts themes have become a sort of visual shorthand in which an entire story can be summed up with just one image. Through the years the media has “borrowed” Peanuts characters, themes, or situations to get a laugh or make a point.
This exhibition, comprised of two installations of editorial cartoons and comic strips, pays tribute to Charles Schulz’s genius and explores the many ways that Peanuts lives on in contemporary popular culture.
The first installation, running Saturday, March 3, through Monday, August 13, 2007, will include the art of over seventy editorial and comic strip cartoonists. The second installation, running Friday, August 17, 2007, through Monday, January 28, 2008, will include additional comic strips as well as a video collage of Peanuts parodies found in television, film, and advertising.

Charles Schulz often remarked that to know his strip was to know him. This exhibition of original Peanuts strips is, in a real sense, Schulz’s “autobiography.” Many aspects of Schulz’s personal life—including childhood memories, friendships, injuries and surgeries, his life with five children, and more—were revealed in his renowned comic strip. The Charles M. Schulz Museum’s newest exhibition, "Schulz: His Life in Peanuts" highlights these autobiographical themes with seventy original Peanuts comic strips.

Canadian artist Jeff Wall is widely recognized as an innovative picture-maker whose dynamic photographs, both color and black-and-white, have affinities with painting and cinema. Their sense of scale comes from Wall's interest in the tradition of painting, and their methods of production from his fascination with cinematography. Douglas Gordon: Pretty Much Every Film and Video Work from about 1992 until Now
Museum

Douglas Gordon emerged in the early 1990s alongside a cluster of celebrated Young British Artists (YBAs). The Glasgow-born artist quickly gained attention for his arresting and thought-provoking film and video works, many of which involved appropriation and manipulation of source films that ranged from popular television to suspense thrillers to archival medical footage. This exhibition brings together nearly all of his video works from the last 15 years in an ever-growing installation titled Pretty much every film and video work from about 1992 until now. To be seen on monitors, some with headphones, others run silently, and all simultaneously. The installation, classified as a single work but comprising approximately 50 individual titles displayed on video monitors, includes Gordon's performance-based videos, as well as his famous pieces like 24 Hour Psycho, a video that slows Alfred Hitchcock's thriller Psycho, stretching it to a 24-hour running time.

Gabriele Basilico
Museum

This exhibition inaugurates an anticipated three-part series exploring the current state of Silicon Valley, and the effects of the technology boom on the region, through the perspective of photographers commissioned by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. A native Italian, Gabriele Basilico studied architecture in Milan before launching his photographic career. His architectural studies continue to inform his work, as Basilico most often takes as his subject cities - notably cities in states of construction or decay, such as the ruins of war-devastated Beirut. This exhibition will present new work produced during Basilico’s month-long residency in Silicon Valley.

Saturday Morning: Inspirations
Music

For more than a decade, our Saturday morning lecture/concert series with the Alexander String Quartet has brimmed with history, humor and the indescribable chemistry that happens when the Fab Five of chamber music take the stage before a lively audience. Much more than a lecture or performance, these Saturday morning events bring to life the history, art, politics, intrigue and romance that have shaped the music we love for centuries.

These engaging events—each about 21/2 hours long—begin with expert commentary by Robert Greenberg, the everpopular teacher and composer, who makes learning about music a genuine joy. When he needs to illustrate a musical point, the Alexander is there to provide it. Each lecture is followed by a full performance by the Alexander of the works discussed. The performance element is what sets the Saturday Morning series apart.

For composers, an essential part of “inspiration” is knowing well the repertoire, and finding kindred spirits and compositions to “lean on” in the creation of their own works. The Alexander String Quartet and Greenberg return with this idea of “inspiration” at the forefront. Each of the five sessions will feature a relatively “new” and a relatively “old” quartet—with the older quartet being, implicitly or explicitly, the inspiration for the newer quartet. Join us for what promises to be an inspiring and incredibly varied season of music for string quartet.

Program:
February 2: Maurice Ravel, String Quartet and Lou Harrison, Quartet Set
February 16: Joseph Haydn, String Quartet Op. 76, No. 1 and Elliott Carter, String Quartet No. 2
March 15: Béla Bartók, String Quartet No. 1 and Robert Greenberg, String Quartet No. 3, Among Friends (for the Alexander String Quartet)
April 12: Béla Bartók, String Quartet No. 5 and Wayne Peterson, String Quartet No. 2
May 10: Franz Schubert, String Quartet No. 14, “Death and the Maiden” and George Crumb, Black Angels (Images I) for electric string quartet
